My Experience

One of our projects, Pitch Project, is inspired by my personal experience and love for the game. I have been playing softball since I was six years old and began to pitch when I was eight years old. Early on, my softball team had great success and won our travel league championship my first summer of 10U. However, from a combination of not taking the right precautions, overpitching the entire season, and not letting myself ever take a break, I had to spend a few months in physical therapy rehabilitating my shoulder. In the fall of freshman year, I faced another overuse injury, this time in both of my shoulders. I have spent a fair share of time in physical therapy since a young age and all of this time, stress, and missing out on softball, could have easily been prevented.

I have a twelve year old brother who plays baseball and pitches. He used to have rules set on how many pitches one could throw at a certain age. Now, those rules have turned into guidelines. For softball, there are no rules nor guidelines set in place. With guidelines or rules of how many pitches are healthy for young girls, instruction on how to properly stretch and warm up, and the confidence to speak up when the pain was too much, I could have prevented the injury before having to intervene to heal the injury. I hope to create a sports community where every girl and woman can train confidently, safely, and sustainably.
