This section will cover some of the most common injuries softball players encounter. Being aware of these potential issues can help players take preventative measures and seek timely treatment. By prioritizing body awareness, athletes can enhance their performance while minimizing the risk of injury.

One of the most important things to do to lower risk of injury is what you do before the game even starts. A good warm-up and stretching can be crucial for injury prevention.

3 Most Common Softball Injuries

SLAP Tear
(superior labrum
anterior to posterior)

  • SLAP tears often develop from repetitive strain on the shoulder.

  • They occur in the upper part of the labrum.

  • The injury happens when the biceps tendon pulls away from the bone, damaging the labrum.

  • Most common cause is overuse

  • Symptoms can include

    • shoulder pain

    • instability

    • reduced function.

  • Prevention:

    • well structured warm up

    • limit pitches/throwing

    • stretch

    • exercise

    • use proper technique

Tendonitis

  • Tendonitis is a common injury, especially in pitchers.

  • It is caused by repetitive overhead throwing.

  • Ignoring the pain can make the injury worse and lead to more damage.

  • Symptoms include:

    • Pain in the front of the shoulder

    • Weakness in the bicep

  • Prevention

    • well structured warm up

    • workout reguarly

    • stretch

Rotator Cuff Injury

  • The rotator cuff is made up of muscles and tendons that stabilize the shoulder.

  • Rotator cuff injuries are common in athletes who do repetitive throwing.

  • Symptoms include:

    • Dull shoulder pain

    • Pain that spreads from the front

    • of the shoulder to the side of the arm

    • Pain when throwing 

  • Prevention: 

    • exercises to strengthen shoulder​

    • stretch

    • good warmup routine

    • good posture
